Specialist Environmental Economics
James is an acknowledged expert in the field and was a lead technical advisor and a lead author of the Natural Capital Protocol and an author of the accompanying Finance Sector Supplement. He is a member of the Capitals Coalition Advisory Panel and has conducted numerous natural, social and human capital assessments using the Natural, Social and Human Capital Protocols. This has included three for Roche (covering a site level natural capital assessment for their Swiss offices, a site and catchment assessment for water in California, and their 2019 Integrated Profit and Loss Account), as well as for APP, International Paper, Shell, Ten Knots Hotel Resorts, WPP and many others. He was also leader of the Natual Capital Accounting for Business Workstream for the EU Business and Biodiversity Platform, and environmental economics advisor to Prince Charles’ Accounting for Sustainability ‘Integrated Value’ working group. Prior to setting up Sustain Value, James led the environmental economics teams at ERM, Jacobs and Posford Duvivier (now part of Royal Haskoning), and before that trained to be an accountant with KPMG. He has an MBA from Warwick Business School (focusing on CSR and environmental markets), an MSc from Newcastle University (focusing on coastal resource management and environmental valuation), and a BSc in Zoology from Exeter University.
